James Baldwin noted that “some people wish to colonize the moon, [while] others dance before it as an ancient friend.” This piece plays out the logic of capital, which asks: How much planetary scarring is worth it to ensure our survival? And taken further: If you don’t have scars, are you even living? In a speculative endless loop, we can watch an industrial disaster unfolding repeatedly and ask in response: What is living if we and the planet are too poisoned to dance?
